How Booting your Computer Faster

 on 9.12.11

Windows has some very useful built in utilities that most people aren’t aware are there. One of which is MSConfig.

Have you ever noticed that when you buy your shiny new computer it boots wicked fast. Then after a few months it seems to take so long to boot that you can go get yourself a coffee before it’s finished.

Well Windows has a utililty that can help you put the spring back in your computer’s step. It’s called MSConfig.

Here’s how you use it:
  • If you’re running Windows 7 or Vista, Click the Windows “bubble”

  • Then type “MSConfig” in the search box

MSConfig.exe will appear above “See more results”. At this point you can either click on it or hit enter.

If you’re running Windows XP
  • Press the Windows key on your keyboard and while pressing it press the ‘R’.
  • Then type MSConfig and hit enter.

  • When MSConfig starts, it displays the following screen:

  • Click on the “Startup” tab
  • You will then see a screen similar to this one:

Now you can go down the left side and uncheck any items you don’t want to start when you reboot your computer.

It’s usually a good idea to not uncheck items from Microsoft although you can and then turn them back on later if you find you are missing a feature.

After you’re done turning items off, click the OK button. The window will close and you may be given the following choice to restart your computer.

Upon reboot Windows will tell you that you’ve restarted with some items disabled. You can ignore that message.
